Eighty years of expanding educational access
Palomar College's main San Marcos campus is located at 1140 West Mission Road, covering 200 acres and serving the college's largest student population. The college is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC/WASC), recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education. As a Hispanic-Serving Institution, 47 percent of Palomar students identify as Hispanic or Latinx, reflecting the region's demographic composition. The college enrolls over 29,000 full-time and part-time students across its service area, which spans 2,555 square miles of North San Diego County.
From founding to comprehensive institution
Palomar College was established by voter approval on January 15, 1946, with a vote of 714 to 417 among registered voters of the Vista Unified, Fallbrook Union, and Escondido Union High School Districts. Classes opened September 23, 1946, with exactly 100 students under the leadership of founding president Dr. Daniel C. McNaughton. The college began at the Vista High School campus before establishing its own dedicated facilities to serve the growing region.
The college is now the county's largest college district and operates the Escondido Education Center (8 acres), Fallbrook and Rancho Bernardo Education Centers (82 and 27 acres, opened summer 2018). The district offers more than 250 associate degree and certificate programs across five divisions and maintains 34 campus organizations and 21 intercollegiate sports teams, providing comprehensive opportunities for student development and participation.
Campus development and the future
Proposition M, approved by district voters in November 2006, authorized a $1 billion facilities improvement plan intended to modernize and expand the college's infrastructure. The Natural Sciences Building, constructed under this bond program, opened in fall 2007 and supports science education and research. Subsequent campus construction has been guided by a Master Plan 2022 and a Vision Plan 2035, reflecting the college's continued investment in student success and modern facilities. Beginning fall 2026, Palomar will offer a new bachelor's degree program in Building Performance and Environmental Design, expanding its role beyond traditional community college offerings.
The main San Marcos campus is accessible via Interstate 5 to Highway 78 east, or from Interstate 15 via Highway 78 west to Las Posas Road, which connects to Mission Road at the main entrance.
