From satellite campus to comprehensive university
California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) is located at 333 South Twin Oaks Valley Road on a 306-acre hillside overlooking the city. Founded in 1989 as the nation's first comprehensive university established in two decades, CSUSM was created as the 21st campus of the California State University system via Senate Bill 365. The university has grown to accommodate approximately 15,431 students and generates over $458 million annually in regional economic impact. The campus generates economic activity across Northern San Diego County, supporting local businesses and employment through student sawaiting confirmation, faculty payroll, and visitor activities.
Path to establishment
CSUSM evolved from the North County Center of San Diego State University, which operated in rented facilities before the permanent campus was built. In 1978, the SDSU North County satellite campus opened in Vista with 148 students, serving the region's growing educational needs. The campus relocated to San Marcos in 1982, occupying leased premises on Los Vallecitos Boulevard, moving closer to the eventual permanent site.
In 1988, CSU trustees purchased the former Prohoroff Poultry Farm site for $10.6 million as the permanent campus location. Groundbreaking took place February 23, 1990, marking the beginning of physical construction. The university opened for classes in August 1990 with 448 juniors and seniors, 12 faculty members, and 9 majors, operating from temporary facilities while the permanent campus was completed. The first Bachelor of Arts degrees were awarded in 1991 to 7 students. The permanent campus at Twin Oaks Valley Road opened in fall 1992, providing the dedicated facilities necessary for sustained growth and expanded academic offerings.
Campus today
CSUSM is designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution and ranked #1 in Social Mobility Index nationally in 2022. The campus features Kellogg Library, a five-story building of approximately 200,000 square feet, and Academic Hall, which has a clock tower visible across the campus. Ellen J. Neufeldt became president in July 2019, continuing the university's leadership tradition established by founding president Bill W. Stacy in September 1989.
By 1997, enrollment reached nearly 4,500 students with 19 bachelor's degrees offered, demonstrating rapid growth in both size and academic scope. CSUSM is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission, ensuring academic quality and institutional accountability.
